Are you doing what you love? Are you passionate about what you are currently doing? Or do you feel a bit meh?
If you love what you do, you will do it better, longer, and with greater passion. You’ll feel a deeper sense of purpose, be motivated, learn faster, and be less likely to make mistakes. When you don’t love being where you are, the exact opposite happens, you’ll feel disconnected, and make more mistakes. If you want to feel more fulfilled, working in a field you love or in a role you are passionate about will give you that higher sense of purpose and feeling of fulfillment.
4 Signs It’s Time for a Career Change
If you’re struggling with conflicting thoughts about your current career, you may be asking yourself if it’s time to switch careers. But how do you know if you really need a change?
Here are 4 signs that may indicate it’s time for a change:
1. Your career is impacting your self-esteem
Staying in a career that makes you feel bad about yourself as a person is not worth it. This can impact your emotional well-being. Your career should be a boost to your self-esteem, not the opposite of that.
2. You’re no longer learning or growing
If you’re not growing professionally, you’re not getting closer to your career goals. You are simply going through the motions without any motivation. If you’re not given opportunities to learn and grow in your job, it may be time to shift to a career that will support your personal and career growth.
3. You feel exhausted
You should consider a career change if your career is impacting your mental and physical well-being. Being overly tired and feeling exhausted at work can lead to mental and physical health conditions. If you’re constantly running on fumes and aren’t sure why it could be your brain’s way of signaling that you’re spending your time in the wrong place.
4. You feel undervalued
If you truly aren’t appreciated in your current career, it may be time to go somewhere else where your contribution is valued – You are valued. Don’t let yourself be undervalued. Feeling undervalued can lead you to believe that your work doesn’t matter, which only serves to create more problems.
If some or all of these signs apply to you, it may be time to make a career change. It’s never too late to start again to do what you love, every day.
Follow Your Passion and Transform Your Life
Now that you are aware of the signs of an unhappy career choice, it’s time to find your passion and follow it. If you could do one thing to transform your life, I would recommend you find something you’re passionate about. Staying in your current career where you are struggling, will only leave you feeling stuck and make you unhappy. Taking time to identify things in your life that make you feel satisfied, excited, and motivated are some of the keys to finding your passion. If you are serious about your life and want to make it successful, you need to:
- Identify your strengths, skills, experience and look at what are some of your long lost passions
- Look at how those strengths, skills, experiences, and passions can fit into different roles and industries
- What will it take to change roles? Do you have the skills and experience now or do you need to take steps, establish your goals and create an intentional plan?
- Develop an actionable attitude, make a plan, rework your resume and bring more fulfillment back to your life.
Finding your passion in life and doing what you love won’t feel like work for you. You’ll wake up full of energy actually wanting to do something, that you enjoy each day. Passion is what gives you boundless energy, and the willpower to overcome even the most daunting obstacles. Passion in what you are doing gives you a sense of self-satisfaction that will certainly help you to keep fueling your success.
4 Steps to a Strategic Career Change
When you find something you’re passionate about, don’t take it for granted. Find a way to fit it in your career. Switching careers takes planning from identifying your strengths, skills, experience, and passions, then putting your plan into action. It’s advantageous to be strategic. A researched, thoughtful and intentional career change will lead you to greater satisfaction.
Below are some steps to help:
1. Do your Research
Once you’ve discovered more about yourself, spend some time researching the types of careers that center around your passion. Start researching what it would take to launch your career in this field. Connect and speak with people who have or are in a similar career, this can be done through their website, social media, or organization, to learn what they did to succeed and follow their path.
2. Make a Plan
Creating a plan means defining a clear goal and milestones to complete it. Make a plan of the steps that you need to take to shift your career. Note down all the details including all that you need to do, how much you need to spend, etc. It’s time to consider what it will take to get there. It is a great idea to bring in a professional to help you strategize your next moves. Creating a strategy is something that my clients and I do together during our career coaching sessions.
3. Networking
One of the real keys in changing careers will be networking. People in your network may be able to offer you advice and information about your industry and introduce you to others so that you can expand your network. Informational interviews can be helpful during a career transition, creating connections, and providing insight into day-to-day activities and responsibilities.
4. Be Flexible
You need to think about your flexibility - what’s important to you – whether it’s location, benefits, flexibility in role, or salary. Set positive goals for yourself and get intentional, the road isn’t always smooth but you will get there.
So, if you think it’s time for a career change, consider taking these steps. You may just end up happier than you ever imagined.
When you have the ability to uncover your passions and take the leap of faith to make the changes you have the ability to achieve things you may have only dreamt about. There may be hurdles and obstacles to overcome but these can turn out to be catalysts in shaping a better future. It’s up to you what you want to do with your life, wouldn’t you rather make a change and have fewer regrets.
Remember – Your life doesn’t get better by chance, it gets better through intentional change!
